cani rinselvatichiti. È abituato a vivere senza problemi in ambienti estremi
TESTA
La testa ha profili rettilinei. E' larga e massiccia, in armonia col corpo.
parallele o solo leggermente divergenti.
I profili laterale
piena.
Tartufo: Grosso, con narici ben aperte, ben pigmentato. Ammessa una leggera
decolorazione stagionale.
Labbra: Moderatamente spesse e serrate.
deve trovarsi troppo all'indietro.
Mascella/Denti: Larga e robusta. Denti grandi, bianchi e sani. Gli incisivi
sono disposti formando una curva molto larga. Chiusura a forbice. Tollerata
Occhi: Di forma ovaleggiante, in posizione sub-frontale.
COLLO: Di media lunghezza, forte e muscoloso, senza giogaia. Il suo profilo
superiore è leggermente arcuato.
TRONCO: Tronco compatto.

largo.
Dorso: Largo, muscoloso e solido. Il suo profilo è rettilineo.
Lombi: Rotondi, ampi e muscolosi.
Groppa: Ampia e muscolosa, di media lunghezza, leggermente inclinata.

superare la metà dell'altezza al garrese. Le coste sono mediamente cerchiate,
oblique e ben distanziate.
Ventre: Il profilo sterno-ventrale risale leggermente verso l’addome.
In
stazione è portata bassa a sciabola. Nell’eccitazione o in movimento è alzata

come l'intero arto posteriore.
Gamba: La tibia è di media lunghezza. Con ossatura forte e muscolatura asciutta.
Garretto: Forte, di buono spessore e fermo. Non deve essere mai corto.
Metatarso: Robusto, asciutto e largo. Possono essere presenti speroni.
Piede: Come l’anteriore, ma più ovaleggiante.
Movimento: Passo sciolto e fluido.

F.C.I. Standard n° 906
ORIGIN: Italy.
UTILIZATION: Shepherd dog used for the protection of sheeo and goats.
F.C.I. Classification: Group I – Sheepdogs and Cattle-dogs (except Swiss
                                 Cattle-dogs).
Section 1 – Sheepdogs. Without working trial.
BRIEF HISTORICAL SUMMARY: For centuries the dog Spino of Iblei has been bred
in the South-eastern Sicily, precisely in the Hyblaean Mountains and in the
surrounding area up to the marina. The primary criterion of breeding of this
breed has always been and still is the utilization of this dog for the guard
and the defense of sheep and goats, for this reason today's dogs have preserved
their temperament.

Marengoni

Drawing by FCI Judge Alberto Marengoni based on the official Breed Standard
GENERAL APPEARANCE: Medium-big size dog with the conformation of a robust
mesomorph. Harmonic, compact and strong, with strong and big bone. At first
sight its appearance must show power and rusticity, without ever appearing
squat. Sexual dimorphism is well pronounced.
IMPORTANT PROPORTIONS:
The length of the head is about 4/10 of the height at the withers.
The length of the skull is greater than the lenght of the muzzle,
approximately 3/2.
The width of the skull is almost equivalent to its length.
The body length is just slightly greater than the height at the withers.
The depth of chest is around 48% of the height at the withers never exceeding 50%
BEHAVIOUR AND TEMPERAMENT:
Its utilization is the protection of flocks from the attacks of wolves,
foxes and feral dogs. The Spino of Iblei is accustomed to live without
suffering in extreme areas in spite of the very poor diet that shepherds give
their dogs. For this reason it is very resistant to common diseases. It is a
fearless and tireless guardian, firm and incorruptible defender of flocks
entrusted to it, but it tends to socialize with strangers when the
shepherd/owner is with it. It is a perfect playmate for children towards whom
it naturally assumes a docile and submissive behavior. It shows pronounced
ability to adapt to any new environment.
HEAD
The head holds straight profiles. It is wide and massive in harmony with the
general appearance. Viewed from above, head is shaped like a truncated cone
with the front face of the muzzle very wide. The upper longitudinal axes of the
skull and muzzle are parallel or just slightly divergent.
CRANIAL REGION:
The width of the skull is almost equivalent to its length. Upper and side
profiles of the skull tend to be straight, so the skull never appears convex.
It may appear round because of the long wig. The forehead is never very high.
The superciliary arches are detectable but never prominent. The medio-frontal
furrow is not marked.
Stop: The stop is slightly marked, never elusive or very marked.
FACIAL REGION

towards the nose remaining wide to the tip, so the muzzle is never pointed.
The upper profile of the muzzle is rectilinear. The suborbital region is full.
Nose: Large, nostrils well opened, well pigmented. Slight seasonal
discoloration is admitted.
Lips: Slightly thick and close fitting. With closed mouth the upper lips never
cover the jaw whose lower margin must always be the lower profile of the muzzle.
Labial commissure closed and never very evident, it must not be placed too
backward. The height of the midline of the upper lips must not be greater than
1/3 of the height of the nose.
Jaws/Teeth: Jaws large and stromg. Big, white and healthy teeth. The incisors
are placed forming a very wide curve. Scissor bite. Level bite is tolerated.
Cheeks: Moderately full, with strong but never prominent muscles.
Eyes: Oval in shape, eyes are in sub-frontal position. Well-spaced, not large
in relation to the size of the head. They are neither protruding nor deep set.
Rims are well adherent and well pigmented. Iris color ranges from light ochre
to dark ochre.
Ears: Set over the zygomatic arch, ears are natural, hanging. Ears large at
their base, V-shaped with extremity slightly rounded. Covered with long hair
with fringes that abundantly exceed the pavilion. Little visible both frontally
and laterally due to the long drooping hair of the skull.
NECK: Half-lenght, strong and muscled, without dewlap. Upper profile is
moderately arched.
BODY: Compact body. The body-length is just slightly greater than the height
at the withers.
Withers: Slightly raised compared to the rest of the top-line. It is long and

of the croup and reaches the level of the hock at least. In normal stand tail is
carried low sabre shaped. Scimitar shaped even over the back when alert or
moving. Well furnished with dense hairs without fringes.
FOREQUARTERS: With powerful muscles and with very strong bone. Viewed from the
front straight, parallel and, as a result of the broad chest, adequately far
apart.
Shoulders: Long, slightly oblique and averagely inclinated.
Upper-arm: Long, well close to the body and furnished with powerful muscles.
